In a time when many popular study destinations are tightening their visa rules, New Zealand is taking a bold step in the opposite direction. With the launch of its new International Education Going for Growth Plan, the country is showing a strong commitment to welcoming and supporting international students, not just through education, but with real opportunities to thrive while they study.
New Work Hour Policy for International students :
One of the most talked-about changes is the increase in work hours for international students. Currently, students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester. But starting from 3 November 2025, this limit will rise to 25 hours per week. This change applies to all new student visas issued on or after that date, even if the application was submitted before that date.
Those who already hold a visa with the 20-hour limit will need to apply for a variation of conditions or a new visa to benefit from the updated rule.
New Zealand’s New Goal :
The change comes at a time when international enrolments are already rising in NZ, with a 26% increase in 2024–2025 alone. The government now has its sights set on doubling the number of international students by 2034, aiming for an economic contribution of NZ$7.2 billion (USD 4.32 billion) from this sector.
Education Minister Erica Stanford said in a press release, “With international student enrolments steadily increasing since 2023, the government wants to ‘supercharge that growth track’ to reach NZ$7.2 billion ($4.32 billion) by 2034.”
This student-friendly approach is being viewed by many as a strategic and progressive move, especially when other countries are imposing additional barriers for international applicants.
So, is New Zealand just playing smart, or is it truly setting the trend for a new global standard in international education? Either way, it’s clear that the country is making itself more appealing and accessible to students around the world, and other nations may soon feel the pressure to follow suit.
